According to a legend from the Skanda Purana, King Kedar—a deeply devout and noble worshipper of Lord Shiva—once ruled over Rudraprayag; hence, the area came to be known as Kedar Khand. A Jyotirlinga manifested here to protect the king, and the site subsequently became known as Kedarnath. This legend is also linked to the Mahabharata.

It is said that after the great war, the Pandavas wandered in search of Lord Shiva to seek redemption for the sin of killing their own kin (*gotra-hatya*). Wherever the Pandavas went, Shiva would vanish; however, when they arrived here in their quest, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a bull, and Bhima recognized him. As Shiva began to sink into the earth, Bhima grabbed him from behind; pleased by this, Shiva absolved the Pandavas of their sins. Since it is Lord Shiva's back that is worshipped here, the shape of the *Shivlinga* at this site differs from that of all other Jyotirlingas.

The portals of Shri Kedarnath Dham open on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya (April–May) and close on the day of Bhai Dooj, following Diwali.

The best times to visit are May–June and September–October. While the pleasant and captivating weather of May and June greatly enhances the travel experience, the area tends to be very crowded during this time; temperatures range between 8°C and 18°C, and the routes remain clear and safe.

How to Reach Kedarnath

As we mentioned in our post about Shri Hemkund Sahib, direct transport options to that location are limited; similarly, there is no direct mode of transport to reach Shri Kedarnath Dham, as both shrines are situated in the Uttarakhand Himalayas. To visit Shri Kedarnath Dham, you must first reach Gaurikund.

By Air: Jolly Grant Airport is the only airport serving the region (including Haridwar, Rishikesh, Hemkund Sahib, and Kedarnath). You must fly to Jolly Grant Airport; for the onward journey, you can travel to Sonprayag via private bus or taxi.

By Train: If you wish to travel by rail, you must reach the Rishikesh or Haridwar railway stations; these are the nearest stations and are well-connected to major states across the country.

From there, you need to travel by private transport to Sonprayag, passing through Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, and Guptkashi. Private vehicles only go as far as Sonprayag; they are not permitted to proceed further. Beyond this point, you must take a local jeep to reach Gaurikund, which is 5 kilometers away from Sonprayag.

The distance from Gaurikund to Shri Kedarnath is 16 kilometers, which you must cover on foot (a 6- to 8-hour trek)

The Cataclysm at Shri Kedarnath Dham — or a Miracle of Bholenath?

It was around 8:00–8:30 PM on June 16, 2013. I was sitting in my room watching the news when a bone-chilling report flashed across the television—one that still gives me goosebumps whenever I remember it.

News reports described how a cloudburst and torrential rainfall had triggered a sudden rise in the waters of Chorabari Lake (Chorabari Tal), sending a devastating surge of water and debris toward Kedarnath. The fury of the Mandakini River and the enormous volume of mountain debris caused unimaginable destruction. Thousands of people lost their lives or went missing, and numerous villages and settlements across the region were devastated.

Yet, amid this unimaginable destruction, the survival of the ancient Shri Kedarnath Temple became a story of extraordinary faith and wonder.

A massive boulder was swept down from the mountain and came to rest directly behind the main temple. The boulder acted like a natural barrier, diverting the force of the rushing water and debris around the temple rather than allowing it to strike the sacred structure directly.

The devastation around the temple was immense, but the main shrine remarkably survived.

For millions of devotees, this was more than a geological coincidence. It felt like a miracle of Mahadev—a moment when it seemed as though Bholenath Himself had stood guard over His sacred abode.

Even today, when devotees stand before Shri Kedarnath Dham and see the massive boulder behind the temple, many remember the events of 2013 with a mixture of awe, sorrow, and faith.

Perhaps science can explain how the boulder altered the flow of water. But faith asks a different question: Was it merely a boulder, or was it Mahadev's protection?
