Hemkund means Lake of Snow. Hemkund is a Sanskrit word, meaning (him) snow + kund (bowl). Shri Hemkund Sahib is situated on the banks of the snow lake. Gurudwara *Shri Hemkund Sahib* is a great pilgrimage site for Sikhs. Every year, millions of people come here to seek Guruji's blessings at the rock formation.

This Gurudwara is situated amidst seven towering mountain peaks in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.

fly atop all seven mountain peaks. This Gurudwara is dedicated to the tenth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Originally established in a small 10-square-foot room, this Gurudwara is now a focal point of faith for millions of devotees. Sri Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara stands at an altitude of 15,200 feet above sea level, nestled among snow-capped rocks and valleys, surrounded by profound serenity. It was here that Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, in his previous life as 'Dusht Daman Ji',

Engaged in deep meditation and performed extremely rigorous penance. In the *Bachitra Natak* (part of the *Dasam Granth*), Guru Gobind Singh Ji recounts the story of his past life, describing Hemkund as a mountain adorned with seven peaks where he performed intense penance and worshipped Mahakal Kalika. In that past life, he was known as Sri Dusht Daman. Sri Hemkund Sahib was constructed in 1936, and its architecture reflects a blend of traditional and modern styles.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the first to visit this site; later, in the 20th century, Sant Sohan Singh Ji rediscovered the location, explained its significance to the public, and helped popularize it.

Special arrangements are made here for pilgrims. A designated area has been created for removing shoes, and free meals are served to every visitor in the *Langar hall* The Gurudwara remains open from May to October.  

The weather here remains extremely cold; therefore, before starting your journey, make sure to carry dry fruits to provide both energy and warmth along the way. Additionally, you must arrange for warm clothing, rain gear, headgear, warm blankets, hot water, warm socks, and trekking shoes suitable for mountain terrain. Also, do not forget to pack travel essentials such as a mobile charger or power bank, a torch, and a first-aid kit stocked with all necessary medicines.




Before planning the journey, it is essential to get a health check-up from your doctor and carry a first-aid kit to handle any potential health issues. Avoid packing excessive or unnecessary luggage for the pilgrimage to Sri Hemkund Sahib so that you do not face difficulties along the way.

Hemkund Yatra Route:

From Haridwar/Rishikesh 

Travelers begin their journey from Haridwar or Rishikesh, traveling 250–280 km by taxi or bus via Joshimath—a trip taking 8–10 hours—to reach Govindghat, where the motorable road ends and the journey must continue on foot. You can also hire pony or mules here.

Govindghat to Ghangaria 

From Govindghat, travelers proceed to Ghangaria, situated at an altitude of over 3,000 meters; it is an excellent place to stay, and the distance between the two points is 10–13 km. 

Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib 

The final leg of the journey from Ghangaria to the Gurudwara covers a distance of 6 km; while the climb is arduous, do not be daunted—simply keep walking while meditating on Guru Ji. The time has come to reap the rewards of the arduous penance that is your journey—meeting your Guru Ji at the Gurudwara. Upon arrival, take a quick bath, enter the Gurudwara, and spend a few moments sitting at the feet of the Almighty Father. Afterward, partake in the Guru's *Langar* (community meal) and begin your descent promptly, as staying here for an extended period is discouraged due to the severe lack of oxygen.

Although the trek is arduous, the beautiful and captivating scenery along the route greatly enhances the experience. As they traverse the challenging 20-kilometer path—marked by steep ascents—they meditate on their Guru and chant His name, finding joy in the journey. Upon reaching the destination, the fatigue of the trek vanishes after visiting the Gurudwara.


To relieve the exhaustion of the journey, pilgrims at Hemkund Sahib first take a holy dip in the lake; after paying their respects at the *Sachkhand*, they partake in the *Guru ka Langar* (community meal).

In the langar hall of Gurudwara Shri Hemkund Sahib, pilgrims are taking langar prasad or sevadars are serving food to the Sangat with great service. This sense of service is the heritage of the Sikhs.


At an altitude of 4,329 meters (14,200 feet) above sea level, oxygen levels are significantly lower. Therefore, pilgrims are advised not to stay at Shri Hemkund Sahib for an extended period. To ensure a safe journey, pilgrims are generally expected to begin their return trek in time to reach Govindghat the same day, following the instructions of the local authorities and the Gurudwara management.

History of Shri Hemkund Sahib


It is said that the tenth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, undertook rigorous meditation as Dusht Daman Ji at Hemkund Sahib in a past life. This site is also associated with penance by Sri Lakshman Ji in the Treta Yuga and King Pandu in the Dwapara Yuga.

Weather in Hemkund Sahib:

The weather at Sri Hemkund Sahib is extremely challenging; one may encounter heavy rain, snowfall, or landslides at any time. Due to the high altitude, oxygen levels in the air are very low.
Due to this dangerous weather and lack of oxygen, pilgrims are not allowed to stay for long. After bathing and darshan, they have to return back down within an hour.

May to June 

The weather of Shri Hemkund Sahib is extremely cold. It is summer season from May to October. The temperature ranges from 2°C to 15°C while the nights are very cold. The weather in Hemkund Sahib is often clear during summers. The weather in May and June is considered favourable for travelling. 

July to August 

The months of June and July are the best time to visit the Valley of Flowers.

but during these days there is a danger of heavy rain and landslides. The roads are very slippery, hence one should travel with great caution and care during these days. 

October to April 

From November to April everything is frozen here. A thick sheet of snow is spread everywhere, be it mountains, roads or trees, nothing is visible here during these days except snow. This is the reason why the doors of Shri Hemkund Sahib are closed in October.

When does the Hemkund Yatra begin?


The Shri Hemkund Sahib Yatra begins from May to October. The doors of Hemkund Sahib will be closed on October 

 How to reach Hemkund Sahib?

You can reach Hemkund Sahib by bus or train.

By Air

If you are going to Hemkund Sahib, you will want to fly to Jolly Grant Airport, which is 268 km from Shri Hemkund Sahib.

You can travel from the airport to Badrinath Dham, and there are also bus services available to Badrinath.

By Train


You can travel by train to Rishikesh Railway Station, which is the cheapest railway station to Hemkund Sahib. Bus and taxi services are also available to Hemkund Sahib. The distance from the shrine to Hemkund Sahib is approximately 275 km.

By Road


To reach Hemkund Sahib by road, you can reach Rishi Bus Stand on the National Highway by bus, car, or motorcycle, and then proceed by bus or motorcycle from Badrinath to Govindghat. The remaining journey can be done on foot, by palanquin, or by mule.

Best Time to Visit Shri Hemkund Sahib:


May to the first week of October is the best time to visit Shri Hemkund Sahib.
