The valleys are narrow in the north, with small crevices in the south, and the coastline is lined with apple forests, dense forests of cedar and pine, and meadows full of wildflowers. The upper reaches are dominated by snowfields, with remnants like the Rohtang Pass (3,978 meters) connecting it to Lahaul-Spiti.

Climate of Manali

The climate is subtropical to tropical (Cfb) - warm in summer (15-25°C), cold in the sea (-2°C to -10°C, with heavy coastal rainfall), and high diurnal variation, meaning warm days and cold nights. However, the weather during these times is treacherous.

People proudly embrace their traditions – communing with their gods (through oracles), creating handwoven crafts, and living together in their communities. Old Manali has a hippie vibe mixed in, but the core hill culture remains intact. Go there and talk to the locals, listen to their stories – it'll feel like time has stopped.

Food: Manali's authentic Himachali food – from the heart to the stomach!

Friends, Manali's food scene is underrated! It's not just momos and pizza, but hearty, warming hill cuisine made perfect for the cold climate – full of ghee, yogurt, lentils, and local ingredients.

Must-Try Dishes:

  • Siddu*-- This is the star! Steamed wheat bread filled with poppy seeds, walnuts, peanuts, ghee, and spices. Hot Siddu with desi ghee in winter – comfort food level 100!
  • Chana Madra/Rajma Madra *--Chickpeas or kidney beans in a thick yogurt gravy with Himachali spices. Creamy and delicious, the main dish at a Dham (traditional feast).
  • Kullu Trout Fish*--Fresh trout from the Beas River, stir-fried or curried with mild spices. Light but tasty – a haven for seafood lovers.
  • Dham*-- A complete festival meal – rice, madra, khatta (sour curry), sepu badi (lentil fritters), and sweets like aktori or mitha.
  • babru (stuffed flatbread), patande (sweet pancakes), and local apple cider or rhododendron juice.

Try the dhabas or Johnson's Cafe in Old Manali – here you'll get a real taste of Manali food.  Tibetan influences also make Thukpa and Momos available, but Pahadi cuisine has a distinct flavor. If you get invited to a local's home, it's like hitting the jackpot – don't forget to try their homemade Siddu!

Manali People's Clothing - Traditional Dress - Pahadi Style Swag

Manali's traditional clothing reflects the cool weather and cultural pride. Pahadi/Kulluvi clothing is made of wool, with vibrant colors and intricate designs.

Famous for women is the *Kullu Pattu* – a handwoven woolen shawl in bright red, green, maroon, or blue, with border designs featuring traditional Kullu motifs (geometric, floral). It is draped in a sari/dupatta style, pinned to the shoulders with a silver brooch (boomani) and tied around the waist with a woven woolen belt (dora or gachha).  Women wear a choli or kurti on top, a ghagra or salwar underneath, and headgear with jewelry.

Men's traditional attire includes a

*chola* (woolen coat or gown), *sultan* or *chamu suthan* (woolen pajamas), and a *dora* belt. Rajputs wear a long kurta over churidar, an embroidered silken overcoat, and a turban. Brahmins in Manali wear a white kurta-dhoti.

These dresses are in full swing during festivals – colorful, warm, and artistic. Nowadays, even tourists rent them and wear them for photos at Hadimba Temple or Mall Road – it's super fun! Locals still wear them daily or on special occasions, which keeps their identity alive.
